The Uganda Press Photo Award(UPPA)’s first comprehensive photojournalism book in Uganda was launched in Kampala on December 5th, 2017. The publication celebrates the first five years of the Award, which promotes and showcases Uganda’s photographic talent.

With this book we take an opportunity to look back and see how far the project has come and more importantly how it has impacted on the growth of photographic talent in the country.

Alongside the award winning pictures is commentary from some of  Uganda’s leading social commentators shedding light on the most topical and memorable images that have enhanced debate and given context to where we are as a society. The writers include Rosebell Kagumire, Daniel Kalinaki, David Tumusiime, Lydia Lakwonyero, Harriet Anena, Joel Ntwatwa  and Solomon King.

On the topics of UPPA activities we get contributions from photojournalist Namutebi Miriam who has been participating in the award for some years now, curator and UPPA director Anna Kućma contributes a brief insight into research she had done on the history of Uganda’s press photography as well as some contemporary photography activities under the UPPA umbrella. We also hear from some of the UPPA judges who have given their time, experience and professional eye to the award through the years.
